What to wear to a job interview in hot weather
What to wear to a job interview in hot weatherWhat to wear to a job interview in hot weatherJust because the weather is a hot mess on the day of your job interview doesnt mean you can be. And so begins the trouble of figuring out what to wear when interviewing in the middle of summer. When its so hot that the sidewalks are steaming and the seatbelt buckle in your car could give you third-degree burns, theres bedrngnis much that you want to do apart from sitting in a pool with a fan blowing directly on you.But life goes on. And sometimes, life may even hand you a job interview on a day when the temperature feels l like it could be nearing 9,000 degrees. So, in addition to the usual nerves you feel about avoiding making a job interview mistake or explaining a gap in your resume, now youre also having a mini freak-out about what youll wear and how youll possibly show up looking cool, calm, and collected. So what do you wear to a job interview in hot weather? While its a challenge, its one you can easily surmount with a little smart planning.1. Choose garments wiselyMaking sure you look great when you show up for your interview involves a lot more than just clothes, but your outfit is the best place to start, since the garments you choose could make or break the first impression you make. Just to make one thing abundantly clear even though its hot out, how you dress for this job interview shouldnt vary that much from how youd dress in November. Its still an interview after all. But here are some ways to make it work for summerFirst, on a hot day, you should try to avoid natural materials like 100% cotton or linen because they wrinkle and wilt like nobodys business when its hot out. Try to plek fabric that includes at least a small percentage of a synthetic material (like Lycra), which will help keep your outfit crisp and professional-looking.As for color, keep in mind that while light shades may keep you cooler in the sun, they are also more likely to show sweat. You c an (and probably should) absolutely go for the classic business suit look, but youll be much cooler if you wear an unlined suit made of lightweight material, instead of the usual heavy wool.Choose a thin, silk shell or blouse to go underneath and youll look and feel put-together.But remember that if its hot outside, there will likely be Arctic-level air conditioning inside, so dont hesitate to choose a long-sleeved blazer.Alternatively, you can opt for a lightweight dress with an unlined blazer. (just remember that your skirt or dress length and neckline should still err on the side of conservative- despite the fact that you probably want to wear only the minimum amount of clothes necessary.)Avoid pantyhose as theyll only make you hotter and are no longer considered a necessary addition to business casual. And, as always, your shoe choice should represent a balance of style and comfort. But given the fact that your feet may sweat, you should choose a shoe that allows you to wear a th in liner so you wont be slipping around inside your heels.2. Go for the easiest form of transportation (and give yourself plenty of time)Now that youve figured out how to dress for your interview, its time to plan your arrival to ensure you avoid (or at least remedy) any heat-related appearance issues before you shake hands with your interviewer. If you can drive to the job interview, do that, even if parking is expensive. Otherwise, its best to take a taxi and ask the driver to pump up the AC for you on the way. Also, make sure to calculate how long it will take you to get to the interview and then double that, at least. Nothing gets you panicked and overheated quicker than the feeling of being late or not having enough time to check yourself over before you walk in.3. Consider getting dressed when you get thereIf you have to take public transportation (or walk), you ought to give yourself extra time and consider wearing a much cooler outfit on the way there and suiting up before you walk into the interview. This may sound extreme, but scout out places where you might be able to do change- a Starbucks is a great option. If a full change isnt an option, at least carry your blazer in a dry cleaning bag so you can throw it on at the last moment before your job interview, even in the air-conditioned lobby. In the end, its going to save you a lot of stress.4. Keep hair and makeup to a minimumA hot weather professional look is all about simplicity- this is not the time to experiment with some fancy new makeup method or an elaborate hairstyle. Thankfully, the no makeup makeup look is totally on trend. Stick to a neutral, minimal makeup look thats easy to andeutung up if you start to melt a bit in the heat. For your hair, try a sleek and cool look like a low chignon. And be very careful about your scent. The strength of perfume is multiplied when your body temperature goes up, so choose something very light or wear nothing at all.5. Plan a pre-interview cool down ( which is also a warm-up)Regardless of your mode of transportation, you should still do a little research beforehand to find a coffee shop or restaurant close to the job interview location. Give yourself 10 minutes to sit down with a cold drink as you mentally go through your responses to the most common job interview questions and do whatever rituals you use to build your confidence before a big meeting.Figure in another 10 minutes or so to go to the bathroom and do some final checks. If your outfit includes a sweater or blazer, then you should bring it with you and put it on here instead of at home. Use this time to take a look at your makeup, your hair, and your clothes one last time before you head out.A few more tipsIf youre at all worried about sweating, you may want to pick up some underarm shields, which will absorb any excess moisture that might throw you off your game. You can easily find them on Amazon or at Target.Put together your own little emergency kit for that last check, including baby powder, moist towelettes, antiperspirant, makeup, hairspray, hair elastic, bobby pins, a gezeit stick, oil-absorbing sheets for your face, mints or breath strips, and a bottle of water.Wait until the last minute to put on anything thats hot or uncomfortable.Keep a handkerchief in your pocket or in an outside pocket of your bag to wipe away any sweat at the last second.Bring a cold bottle of water with you - sipping it on your route to the job interview will actually cool you down. This article was originally posted on CareerContessa.com.

This may be the key to getting teens to smoke less marijuanaThis may be the key to getting teens to smoke less marijuanaAs more and more states push for recreational marijuana legalization, less of Americas youth is toking up in those that have already passed the law, according to a new study. It seems that legalizing marijuana doesnt encourage teens to smoke pot, as a report published in JAMA Pediatrics found that teens are less likely toke up if recreational marijuana has been legalized in their state. There is simply no evidence that legalization for medical or recreational purposes leads to an increase in teen use, lead researcher fruchtfleisch Anderson said, according to UPI. Opponents of these laws generally state this as a primary concern, but there is just no evidence that teen consumption goes up.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreEleven states in the US have legalized recre ational marijuana use already with Illinois set to become the next in 2020. Laws have passed for medical marijuana in 34 states. The study analyzed more than one million high school students from 1993 to 2017 using data compiled from annual Youth Risk Behavior Surveys, a national study conducted by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Data welches compared about reported marijuana use by participants before and after legalization laws were adopted in 27 states.Researchers found medical marijuana laws didnt influence teens smoking habits, but recreational marijuana laws resulted in nearly a tenth (8%) decreases in the possibility of drug use. There was also a 9% decrease in the likelihood of teens using it 10 or more times.Just to be clear we found no effect on teen use following legalization for medical purposes, but evidence of a possible reduction in use following legalization for recreational purposes, Anderson said. Because our study is based on more policy variatio n than prior work, we view our estimates as the most credible to date in the literature.

Its OK to call out of work for this common affliction
Its OK to call out of work for this common afflictionIts OK to call out of work for this common afflictionWhile many are eagerly anticipating a balmy break from cuffing season, the 50 million Americans that suffer from allergies this year are likely dreading the ensuing 8 hour work days composed of constant, sneezy, watery-eyed, trips to the bathroom. Even though allergies are the sixth most common chronic illness, professionals seem to be particularly ashamed of them.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreA recent survey about allergies in the workplaceA survey of 2,000 Americans conducted by a ventilation manufacturing company called Trane, disclosed thatnearly 47% of people feel guilty about requesting days off because of their allergy symptoms-so much so, that 1 in 5 respondents said that they feel more comfortable lying to their bosses about it than confessing their pollen problem . Fifty-one percent feel as though theyre allergy symptoms wont be taken seriously enough to warrant sick days, though about 29% admit to taking more than one day off to battle their allergies in the comforts of their home. The average allergy sufferer is subjected to symptoms for about 11 days out of the month. It should be noted that 1 and 4 of the individuals surveyed believe that their homes air quality actually makes their symptoms worse. According to the product manager at Trane, Jay Ayers, the best way to mitigate the effects of intense allergic reactions is to address air quality. Although allergies can be unpredictable, the most effective way to reduce indoor pollutants is by installing a good whole house allergy filter or a whole house air cleaner, he said.Trane addresses this potential solution in their survey, revealing 54% of sufferers are willing to invest in a humidifier or purchase an air cleanser to lessen their drippy-nosed misery. The apparent stigma that convinces employees to weather the itchy-nasally storm at work is a particularly toxic one considering how long allergies tend to impact a sufferers health. Around 74% of Americans experience allergies from about January to September. Over 30% of the individuals questioned in the survey say spring is the worst in terms of symptoms, noting that April 12 is a rough day in particular. Moreover, a Taiwan research study conducted last year found an increased risk to psychiatric disorders in individuals with allergic diseases. The researchers examined individuals with asthma, seasonal allergies and eczema alongside a constant group that had no allergies whatsoever. In conclusion Allergic diseases are therefore associated with a 1.66-fold increased hazard of psychiatric disorders in Taiwan. The severity of symptoms varies depending on the sufferer, though even the mildest case should not be dismissed as a slight inconvenience. Over half of the participants in Tranes survey said that their allergies ar e the primary reason for their insomnia. This number is divided almost cleanly in half with 48% saying their runny nose, in particular, is the culprit for their sleepless nights with the rest blaming general stuffiness or other correlative factors. If youd rather head into work during your allergy outbreaks than make a case for your absence to your employer, its important to be mindful of your triggers, as previously reported by Ladders. The most common triggers include dust, humid air, pollen, tobacco smoke, and cold air. As writerJacqueline Mcelhone puts is,One of the best things you can do is pay attention not only to when youre having an allergic reaction but to what you were doing before it happened- what caused it? 10 Traits of Successful People Who Get Promoted - The Muse
10 Traits of Successful People Who Get Promoted - The Muse10 Traits of Successful People Who Get PromotedIn ansicht competitive times, advancing in your career is far from automatic. Those who sit back and wait for things to happen for them often end up frustrated, disillusioned, and burned out. In contrast, those who look for opportunities and seize them seem to have better luck than others. Of course, its not luck at all.If youre looking to move ahead in the workplace, youd do well to learn from those who seize the day and seem to advance easily. Here are the top 10 traits of people who advance in their careers.1. They Enjoy a ChallengeToo many people, when faced with a time-consuming project or a lengthy assignment, try to shirk their responsibilities or delegate them to others. But those who advance dont shrink away from challenges and adversity. They see these times as opportunities to learn and grow- a new project, a new boss, or a new office are all chances to grow in a new wa y.To advance in your career, embrace challenges instead of shrinking away. Not only will your skill set come out stronger as a result, your manager and other company higher-ups will see you taking the initiative. Remember, rewards come to those who stand out- not those who blend into the background.2. They See Failures as OpportunitiesDealing with failures as a professional is very difficult. You feel as if youve let yourself and your colleagues down. However, those who advance in their industries see failures as opportunities. Rather than blaming others or beating themselves up for making a mistake, they learn from their experience and focus on doing better in the future. When you see failure as an opportunity to grow, youll be less prone to the emotional upset associated with it and youll advance in your career more quickly.3. They Possess ConfidenceIts amazing how an aura of capability makes people think you really are capable. Those who advance quickly possess confidence- in them selves, their work, and their career plan. This confidence helps others trust them, which helps them be seen as leaders. As you pursue your next promotion, remember to build and exude confidence. Even if youre a naturally shy person, you can learn to change the way you hold yourself, your body language, the tone of your voice, and more with consistent practice.4. They Are OptimisticNo one likes to be around a co-worker who constantly complains and sees the negative in everything. Those who advance quickly are optimistic, seeing solutions instead of problems. They arent unwilling to admit to challenges, but instead, they look for ways to overcome them.To advance more quickly in your career, try looking on the brighter side. If optimism doesnt come naturally to you, practice at home by writing down three to five things a day that youre grateful for. These can be small things- like the fact that you hit a green light at a busy intersection. No matter what you write down, learning to see the good throughout your life will carry over into your performance at the office.5. They Are Open to FeedbackBeing coachable is a major parte of succeeding in business. Those who are promoted rapidly take feedback well and are able to learn from it and implement changes. Instead of seeing feedback as criticism of your work, see it as constructive- youll be on the path to moving ahead quickly. If criticism tends to throw you- leaving you either angry with rage or teary with disappointment- learn to take a few minutes to compose yourself before responding to the feedback. Try saying something like, I appreciate the feedback, but Id like to take a few minutes to reflect on it privately. Can we discuss this further in an hour?6. They Look for a MentorHaving someone on your side who can advocate for you is a big part of being promoted swiftly. Those who are successful seek out mentors whom they can learn from. Then, they also benefit from that manager or leader advocating for them or po inting out potential opportunities to take on new responsibilities.Look for a mentor in your company who can help get you on the fast track, but dont take the mentor-mentee relationship lightly. If a senior manager offers to assist you in this way, either in a formal or informal mentorship capacity, be respectful of his or her time and do your best to repay the favor whenever possible.7. They Are FlexibleWhile succeeding isnt about giving up all your nights and weekends, being flexible has its advantages. Sometimes being flexible isnt about more hours at all- its just as much about being willing to head up a project when you expected a quiet month in the office. To succeed in your career, do your best to be more flexible with the changing demands of the business. Your boss will notice.8. They Focus on ResultsIn business, its not about whose job a task is- its about getting the task done. Those who advance quickly focus on results- their own, their departments, and the companys. They dont waste time with blaming or shifting responsibility. They dig in and get the work done. When you do this in your work, youll be positioning yourself well for success.9. They Aspire for MoreSometimes, the only difference between someone who gets promoted and someone who doesnt is the want it factor. When you make it known that you aspire for more from your job and company, youll put yourself out there as someone whos available for additional responsibility and promotion.Of course, youll need to be careful with this one. Gossiping openly about how you deserve a better title isnt going to do you any favors, so learn to show, not tell. Make it clear to your immediate supervisor that youre interested in advancement opportunities, but also prove that youre willing to put in the work to be worthy of them.10. They Are Good at NegotiationIts no secret that its hard to create win-win situations on the job. Often, no matter how hard you work to avoid it, some people feel short-changed in a situation, while others feel they won. Those who succeed quickly are those who learn to help everyone feel great about a particular outcome and stress the positive points for everyone involved. The good news about all 10 of these traits is that they can be learned and developed. Dont feel like those who advance rapidly in their careers are somehow better than you. Theyve simply mastered these 10 traits and used them to their best advantage. With a little practice, you can too.More from Inc.5 Reasons You Dont Need an Elevator Pitch How to Avoid Falling Into the Success Trap5 Work Perks That Are Also TrapsPhoto of woman rock climbing courtesy of Shutterstock.

Six Lessons from My First Year at Uber
Six Lessons from My First Year at UberSix Lessons from My First Year at Uber In January 2017 I joined Uber as Chief People Officer. I dont often reflect on my work publicly but now that Ive hit the one-year mark I have a few thoughts to share. As you know, Uber had a rollercoaster 2017. There welches no way I could have predicted how the year would unfold, but now that Im on the other side of it I can look back and honestly say it has been the best learning experience of my career, so much so that I thought I would jot down my lessons learned. Here is what I know to be true none of it earth-shattering, but all of it very realThe fruchtwein brilliant strategy will hit a wall unless its grounded in listening and deep research. This is especially true when any sort of change is necessary. If we dont invest the time to deeply listen and understand its likely we will solve the wrong problem - which puts us back at square one. Of curse this sounds obvious, but how often do we really put ur own ideas and agendas aside and keep ur minds open? One of the first things I did when I arrived at Uber welches host a ton of listening sessions to understand what was on employees minds. No agenda, no structure, just questioning and listening. These early sessions told me many things - one being that employees did not trust our performance management process and wanted something that was more balanced, qualitative and development focused. So we - and by we I mean employees - rebuilt our Perf ordnungsprinzip and methodology from the ground up. Hundreds of employees attended build sessions and 100% of our employees had the opportunity to comment through surveys and global focus groups to help design the new system that we started rolling out in mid-2017. We didnt just sit in HQ as a People team and design the process instead, it was ideated and implemented by the people who would be using it.Setbacks happen in every organization. Although its tempting to lock down until things blow over, in times of shared pain, being visible, authentic and available to employees is essential. Even if you dont have an answer or a solution to a crisis, showing up and being honest and transparent is the most important action we can take as leaders.I had to do this in one of my hardest moments at Uber a scant few weeks after I joined. In mid-February I read a blog deutsche post ag written by Susan Fowler, a female engineer who described inappropriate behavior and other troubling incidents that contributed to her having a very negative work experience at Uber. The blog post went viral, and two days later I had to face 15,000 devastated employees at an all-hands meeting. What made it worse was that Id had an accident the day before and one side of my face was bleeding, swollen and badly bruised. Believe me, the last thing I wanted was to be front and center. But I knew that was where I was needed.I got through the meeting, and the challenging weeks that followed. It was a painful time but also the start of a much-needed healing process for the company. Hundreds of employees asked me what we should do my answer was always the same we need to use Susans input to bring about change, and be genuinely kind and caring toward each other always. At the time it was hard for me to understand exactly what was happening, but in retrospect, its clear one very brave piece of prose, authentically written, created a lightning rod for change at Uber. For that, I truly thank Susan.Through hosting dozens of sessions across the company in a few weeks it was obvious we needed to evolve our culture and business practices. We had to listen with an open mind and solicit feedback from all our employees. In fact, we had to go further, we had to rebuild trust, slowly and meaningfully so we moved from listening to involving to working together, side by side.As I mentioned earlier we engaged our employees in designing our new performance management system, and it did n ot stop there - every change we made (based on the feedback from the listening sessions) involved our employees. Upwards of 60% of our managers were managing for the first time and in truth we had not supported them as well as we should have. So we undertook dozens of interviews and another big survey to gather insights on what makes a great manager at Uber. Since mid-2017 we have been embedding those competencies into all of our trainings and will gauge our success by integrating them in our Culture Survey. We asked for feedback again, when our new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi joined us in September, to help define Ubers new cultural norms - a truly collaborative undertaking to ensure everyone had a voice in crafting a shared vision for how were going to work with our riders, drivers, communities and each other. It takes a lot of time and patience to do things this way, but what Ive learned is that enabling change is most successful when you actively involve people every step of the way. Oh and by the way we arrived at better and more creative outcomes because our employees are simply awesome. The past year has taught me that creating change around diversity and inclusion needs to be more than a token effort. Many ERG leaders told me that they felt it was really hard to add value because all of their ERG work had to be over and above their day-to-day responsibilities. That gave me the idea to introduce a citizenship goal so that every Uber employee has the opportunity to contribute in some way to the community (very broadly defined) as part of their day job. We must never push inclusion to the sidelines - it should be central to who we are, and woven throughout everything that we do.In the spirit of bringing diversity front and center, in March 2017 we published Ubers first-ever diversity and inclusion report and shared it both internally and externally. Our investment in our employee resource groups (ERGs) is proving instrumental in helping to drive dialogue and c ulture change. More than 5,000 employees regularly interact with our ERGs - thats around a third of our global employee population. Whats even more incredible is our that our ERGs have a real voice, they make things happen, and they really are empowered. Im constantly inspired by the positive energy and passion of our ERGs.My personal goal is for Uber to be the MOST inclusive company where everyone feels respected, valued and able to contribute. We made great progress in 2017 and we will work tirelessly to achieve this goal in 2018.Ill admit I borrowed this from Amazon, but my goodness its worth it. No team agrees 100% of the time nor should they diversity of opinion is essential to creation. Having the confidence to admit I dont have the best answers and to invite a broad spectrum of input is crucial to getting the best outcome. I do believe though that once we have made a decision there is no room for negative side conversations or half-hearted execution - I expect my leaders to sell the solution with passion. Having very different personalities on a leadership team should not be an impediment - as stated above, diversity of opinion leads to better decisions, but only if we truly align and commit.Last but not least its more important than I ever could have imagined to be resilient in times of stress and change. That requires taking care of our spirit, getting enough rest, supporting each other, and devoting time to aspects of the job that energize and inspire us. At times when Ive been at my worst - tired, over-caffeinated and blindly putting tasks over people - my inner mantra has kicked in to remind me to breathe deep and focus on caring. It also helps to remind myself and others of all the incredible things weve accomplished over the past year Our 180 Days of Change rollout is transforming our relationship with drivers, improving everything from driver earnings to support. For our employees we implemented a comprehensive equal pay analysis and raised tech salaries to ensure aggregate pay equity between women and men, and between all racial groups. We also organized our first Global Week of Service where more than 2,200 Uber employees spent 7,300 hours volunteering at 125 events globally. We showed each other we care by donating money, supplies, and logistical support in response to last years hurricanes, the Mexico City earthquake and the Wine Country fires. We even had a grassroots effort to reignite employee pride and remind ourselves that we are Good People Doing Good Things .So my take on the last year may not sound revolutionary or new, nor does it involve technological breakthroughs. What I really learned is everyone is trying to do their best, everyone deserves respect, and everyone has good ideas. (On the flip side negativity hurts organizations and teams, but most of all it hurts us as individuals.) Creating a company that allows people to be themselves, nurtures genuine kindness, support and consideration for others an d includes everyone will lead to success. Were already seeing it as our Culture Survey results are starting to climb, our new CEO has a 97% approval rating on Glassdoor , and Uber has a 4.3 overall rating. And heres what our employees have to say about working here Great place to learn and grow Amazing business challenges Lots of autonomy and upward opportunity Solving problems in the real world, at scale and Anyone can make an impact. With our amazing new leadership team, our unbelievably even more amazing employees, our tremendous business growth, and our new cultural norms, we will make Uber the best place to work for everyone. Come and join us we really are changing the world. This article was originally publish on LinkedIn Pulse . Reprinted with permission.

In addition, if either attorney or the court questions the mental state or condition of the defendant, there has to be a motion to elevate the problem and the criminal proceedings have to be suspended. Gasps could be heard from all over the courtroom. Judging competency The Supreme Court of the USA established competency to be able to be certain that a defendant can rationally take part in and understand the court approach. There is going to be a hearing in the front of the Clerk to determine incapacity. The distinction of this from the test to find out whether the kid understands the oath is there is no requirement for the child to comprehend the solemnity of the court and doesnt need to comprehend their duty beyond everyday meaning of it. Competency with respect to a court proceeding usually means the kid is capable of understanding the charges and is in a position to help the defense attorney in a meaningful way. Among the really challenging questions is the degree to which an individuals capacity has to be impaired before he or she loses their right to create a decision. Presuming competence isnt something we do because we are a superb person. Study American couples argue about this simple decision 72 times a year
Study American couples argue about this simple decision 72 times a yearStudy American couples argue about this simple decision 72 times a yearWe all know the moment. Youre standing in a furniture store. Yur significant other likes the wooden coffee table. Youre more into plexiglass with your contemporary living room aesthetic. And all of a sudden, what should have been a nice afternoon shopping for your new apartment devolves into a relationship-defining moment. That, of course, makes sense After all, how can you ever relate to your so-called loved one when his taste in couches issolely based on functionality and completely disregards appearance? As you spiral into an existential crisis, not koranvers whether youll ever be able to adjust to a home where the chairs are actually *comfortable* instead of avant-garde, you may feel like the most alone person in the world. That makes sense as well Your soul mate doesnt seem to appreciate your unique and urbane sense of style, even though fri ends have for years told you that youre so good at interior design that you should try it as a profession. But it turns out youre not alone - not even close. In fact, furniture hunting is a major catalyst for stress among many, many couples, all of whom probably believe they know better than their partners.According to a new survey by OnePoll and furniture company Article, every year the average couple will have around 72 disagreements about decor style, purchasing decisions, and furniture purchases. Eight of those will occur in the store itself, while 10 happen in front of a familiar audience - a family member or friend whose two cents can be used as leverage.Even at fun-filled sites such as movie theaters and amusement parks, people are not immune from arguing about their furniture choices. It seems that between roller coaster rides, those rug color swatches are still at the forefront of our minds. Some astute beings have learned how to free themselves of this common fodder for ar guments, either through solitude or reticence. 15% of Americans avoid furniture shopping alongside their partners because the visit always leaves them feeling grumpy with each other. Meanwhile, 58% dont even weigh in on shopping because theyre not gunning for a fight. But for those who havent quite mastered the art of apathy, its obvious why we care so much about the furniture we choose - we spend 216 hours researching and buying furniture for ourselves, and after that kind of time commitment, weve clearly developed strong opinions. The survey found that the most common reasons people bicker include budget, furniture styles, and color selection, amid other concerns. So if youve gotten in a blow-out fight over your homes decor, youre far from the only one. And its okay to feel strongly about where you live. You just have to keep in mind that your partner cares, too, and its probably all because both of you want to make the perfect home for one another.Keep that in mind the next time y our significant other picks out that excruciatingly ugly lamp. Even though the object may look like it belongs in a garbage heap, the recommendation itself comes straight from a heart of gold that you know youll treasure again - once all the furniture is picked out.

Final Reminder Papers Due July 31 for Special Journal Issue
Final Reminder Papers Due July 31 for Special Journal Issue Final Reminder Papers Due July 31 for Special Journal Issue Final Reminder Papers Due July 31 for Special Journal IssueJuly 22, 2016 The editorial board for the ASME Journal of Medical Devices is announcing its final call for papers for a special issue of the journal focusing on cardiovascular device development and safety assessment using computational and experimental approaches. The deadline to submit a paper for the special issue is July 31. Cardiovascular devices must typically interact with a complex physiologic environment that can severely challenge device performance and longevity. These challenges include blood damage such as hemolysis and thrombosis changing contact conditions during each heartbeat high-cycle fatigue-to-fracture and the need to accommodate the highly variable geometric, material, and hemodynamic environment encountered across the target population. The cardiovascular device industry increasingly relies on computer modeling as a controlled and repeatable methodology for assessing these device design-related factors. Clinicians are also evaluating computer modeling as a pre-interventional planning tool that can confirm the need for treatment and optimize treatment outcomes. This special issue of the Journal of Medical Devices is intended to be a collection of original research that highlights the use of computer models in every phase of cardiovascular device development and assessment. Papers being submitted for the special issue should employ one or more of a variety of approaches, including computational variabel dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA), high- and low-frequency electromagnetics, reduced-order and lumped parameter approaches, multi-scale analysis, anatomic models, and statistical shape analysis (PCA). Contributions are expected to tie the work described to the design of a medical device, either by incorporating a simulated device as an example or by des cribing how the computational tool would be used in the design of a specific medical device.Papers for the Special Journal Issue on Cardiovascular Device Development and Safety Assessment Using Computational/Experimental Approaches should be submitted by July 31 using the ASME Journals Digital Submission Site. Authors should be sure to select the special issue Medical Devices from the menu on the left when submitting their papers. For more information on the special journal issue, contact the journals guest editor, Marc Horner, Ph.D., Technical Lead, Healthcare, ANSYS Inc., at marc.horneransys.com.
